Bronx Criminal Courthouse Complex
Bronx, New York

Architect: Rafael Vinoly Architects P.C.

This 750,000 square foot courthouse was designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects with Flack & Kurtz as Project Engineers. Bill Bobenhausen, FAIA, worked with the design team to optimize the building envelope, lighting, daylighting, HVAC and central plant.

A portion of the project involved development of energy-efficient solutions for the "all-glass" curtain wall concept formulated by the world famous architect. The curtain wall delineates exterior corridors, which connect the various functions of the building. The purpose of the glass façade is to provide real and symbolic transparency; to direct light into core zones (courthouses, jury rooms); and to create a transition zone between the environment and the courtroom system. Many alternative designs were analyzed including: flat facades vs. serrated/sawtooth facades.

Shading strategies were also analyzed including use of exterior vertical, exterior horizontal, and interior shading devices; and various glass types (e.g., clear, low-e tinted, fritted).

The energy analyses integrated the envelope study into the lighting, HVAC and central plant design by offsetting additional costs for a superior wall with lower cost in the mechanical system. Concepts of displacement ventilation and alternate chiller systems were also studied.

The building is expected to use at least 30% less energy than a typical code-compliant design, while providing superior comfort.

Environmental design assistance was provided by Steven Winter Associates through NYSERDA's FlexTech Program.
