William
Bobenhausen, FAIA, headed up the effort to
provide technical assistance to the New York City Department of Design and
Construction (DDC) in the development of the energy-efficient "High
Performance Building Guidelines". The guidelines, which were finalized in April of 1999, now serve as a
comprehensive inventory of green building strategies that are being applied to
many city-funded construction and renovation projects. The guidelines also
delineate an overall green building design process, which serves to improve the
integration between the various professionals on the design and construction
teams.
The guidelines identify goals, strategies, benefits, implications, and
deliverables (from consultants or contractors) for a wide range of green
building topics. Mr. Bobenhausen assisted in the guidelines
development by leading workshops, and by drafting, editing, and providing
technical reviews for the majority of the guidelines chapters, including:
- Building Energy Use;
- Indoor Environment (including indoor air quality):
- Material and Product Selection;
- Construction Considerations;
- Commissioning; and
- Operations & Maintenance Procedures.
The document is available on the internet through the DDC website.
Assisting in the development of the document were
Stephen Campbell of Phoenix Design; William Reed, AIA;
and Steven Winter Associates under NYSERD's FlexTech Program.
